Diesel Station Aux Power to GT

Your diesel station runs on more than its engines. Pumps, fans, compressors, battery chargers, lighting and controls all draw from auxiliary boards that were sized for the plant you have today. When gas turbines arrive, they bring their own lube oil pumps, starting systems, enclosure fans, fuel gas heaters and cooling loads.

If nobody re-plans auxiliary power, a board overloads during a start, an essential supply drops in a station trip, or a turbine cannot restart because its auxiliaries are dead. That is an outage risk you carry on every start and every fault.

USP&E Helps You Re-plan Diesel Station Auxiliary Power

We know auxiliary systems are easy to overlook when everyone is focused on the new machines. USP&E brings 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers re-plan house load, auxiliary transformers, boards and essential supplies when gas turbines join a running diesel station. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

The aim is a station where you know every auxiliary load, every board has the capacity it needs, and the supplies you need to restart survive the worst trip you can imagine.

List Every Auxiliary Load You Have Now

Start with a full auxiliary load list for the diesel station: fuel transfer and booster pumps, cooling water pumps and radiator fans, air compressors, ventilation, battery chargers, lighting, controls, workshop and office supplies. Record the rating, duty and which board feeds each load.

Measure where you can rather than relying on old drawings. Stations grow over the years, and loads are added to boards without anyone updating the list.

Note which loads you must keep running during a station blackout and restart. Those essential loads decide how you arrange supplies later.

Add the Turbine Auxiliaries and Check Capacity

Your gas turbine generators bring a new set of auxiliaries: lube oil pumps including emergency DC pumps, starting motors or packages, enclosure ventilation fans, fuel gas heaters and compressors where needed, cooling systems and controls. Get the real figures from the package supplier.

Add them to your load list and check each auxiliary transformer, board and motor control centre against the new totals. Pay attention to starting loads: a large starting motor can pull a board voltage down and trip other equipment if the board is weak.

Check DC systems too. Turbine protection, controls and emergency lube oil pumps often rely on batteries, so battery and charger capacity must cover the worst case with margin.

Protect Essential Supplies and Plan the Changeover

Separate essential supplies so a station trip does not remove what you need to restart. Black-start diesels, emergency lube oil and turning gear, controls and battery chargers should have supply paths that survive the event.

Board changes need outages, so plan your cover first. Natural gas engines/stations, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry load while boards are extended or replaced, and switching should follow written steps.

Auxiliary design scales up to the largest plants. In hyperscale EPC/O&M, teams plan house load for AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute from day one, and stations built around the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA treat auxiliary supplies as part of reliability, not an afterthought.

USP&E Teams Behind Your Diesel Power Station Site

Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your diesel station protection upgrade from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.

Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for relays, switchgear and gas turbine packages for your diesel bus; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.

For diesel station auxiliary upgrades, Johannesburg and Cape Town electrical engineers can survey your boards and MCCs with the station electrician and measure real loads before turbines connect. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has carried 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

HowTo: Re-plan Diesel Station Auxiliary Power for GT

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share auxiliary single-lines, board schedules and turbine data under NDA. 2. Receive an updated load list and board capacity check. 3. Upgrade boards with cover in place, then run under accountable O&M.

  1. List every station auxiliary load: pumps, fans, compressors, chargers, lighting and controls.
  2. Add the auxiliary loads that gas turbine generators bring: lube oil, starting, enclosure ventilation, fuel gas and cooling.
  3. Check auxiliary transformer, board and MCC capacity against the new list.
  4. Separate essential supplies so a station trip does not take out what you need to restart.
  5. Plan cover with natural gas engines/stations or a remanufactured GE Frame 6B during board changes.
  6. Hand the auxiliary single-line diagram and load list into O&M.

FAQ: Diesel Station Aux Power to GT

Why re-plan auxiliary power when adding turbines?

USP&E sees turbine auxiliaries such as lube oil pumps, starting systems, enclosure fans and fuel gas heaters add real load to station boards. Your existing boards were sized for diesels. Without a new load check, starts and faults can overload boards or drop essential supplies.

Which auxiliary loads are essential for restart?

USP&E treats black-start supplies, emergency lube oil and turning gear, controls, protection and battery chargers as essential. Your station cannot restart safely without them. They need protected supply paths that survive the worst station trip, kept separate from general house load.

Do turbine starts affect station boards?

USP&E checks starting loads carefully, because a large starting motor can pull board voltage down and trip other equipment. Your auxiliary transformer and board must handle that dip. Sometimes a soft starter, a stronger supply or a different starting method solves the problem.

What about DC systems and batteries?

USP&E sizes batteries and chargers for the worst case, including emergency lube oil pumps running down a turbine after a blackout. Your DC system protects machines when everything else is lost, so it needs margin, testing and a clear maintenance routine.

Where are USP&E’s offices that support diesel stations?

USP&E supports diesel stations from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where electrical and O&M engineers sit closest to your plant. London handles contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support turbine supply, and Wuxi covers China manufacturing. Every office uses one project file.

Has USP&E delivered power station projects before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover Barrick, where USP&E rebuilt engines and added new capacity at a mine power station. You can read each case study for yourself.

Is USP&E a broker for station equipment?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that designs, builds and operates power stations with its own engineers, so the team that re-plans your auxiliary power also commissions it and answers for how your station restarts.

How fast can USP&E respond on an auxiliary review?

USP&E can start reviewing your auxiliary single-lines, board schedules and turbine data as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag overloaded boards and weak essential supplies first, then plan a site survey, with timing set by data quality and access.

Make Sure Your Station Can Always Restart

Get auxiliary power right and every start and restart has the supplies it needs. Get it wrong and the first sign is a board trip, a dead lube oil pump or a station that will not come back. USP&E will help you plan, upgrade and run with confidence.
