Diesel Station Protection to GT
Your diesel power station has run for years on protection settings everyone has stopped questioning. Now gas turbines are being added to the same bus, and the relay coordination, fault levels and synchronisation logic that kept you safe were never designed for them.
If protection is not re-studied, the first fault after the turbine arrives could trip the wrong breaker, black out the station and damage equipment worth far more than the study would have cost. Your customers and your reputation pay the price.
USP&E Guides Your Diesel-Plus-GT Protection Plan
We understand that a protection study feels like paperwork until the day it saves a station. USP&E has worked since 2002 in 85+ countries, building 150+ power stations and supplying about 25 000 MW, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries today. Our 400+ engineers and project managers study, test and commission protection. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Protection Is the Real Gate for Diesel-Plus-GT
Adding gas turbine generators changes fault current, earthing, reverse-power behaviour and the way the bus responds to large load steps. Every relay setting needs to be rechecked, coordination curves redrawn and breaker duty confirmed. That work decides whether the turbine can connect safely, long before the machine arrives.
Start with an updated single-line diagram, current relay settings and a load-flow model. Your station records show where the bus is already stretched, and the protection study shows whether you need new switchgear sections, neutral earthing changes or upgraded breakers.
Start with an up-to-date single-line diagram, fault levels and relay settings for your diesel station. Without that baseline, nobody can prove how a turbine will share faults with your engines, and lenders or insurers will ask for the study before they accept the new capacity.
Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Studies Finish
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can bridge capacity while gas supply and protection upgrades are completed. You should confirm its generator protection package, excitation system and control status, and check inspection records and preservation, before it parallels with your diesels.
Natural gas engines/stations may also join the bus where gas is available. Each technology responds differently to faults, so give every machine a clear role in the protection philosophy and test the combined response before commercial operation.
Plan Diesel Halls Beside Modular FX-45 Blocks
If your station will one day supply compute, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute will push fault levels higher still. Reserve switchgear positions, earthing capacity and cable routes now so later blocks do not require a full protection rebuild.
The planning reference for those blocks is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. Used/new gas turbines can come first, and USP&E can carry the protection file into hyperscale EPC/O&M as the station grows.
Keep protection studies live as your plant grows. Every modular FX-45 block you add changes fault levels and coordination, so your settings file should be updated and re-tested at each phase rather than only at first handover.
Global Offices Behind Your Diesel Power Station Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your diesel station protection upgrade in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When relays, switchgear and gas turbine packages for your diesel bus must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For your protection upgrade, that means study engineers in Johannesburg, commissioning specialists who can reach your station for relay testing and a London team that keeps lenders informed of the plan. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 85+ countries guided, 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Diesel Power Station Buyers
You want proof that USP&E can build and expand diesel and HFO stations safely. These projects show that experience.

- Barrick Gold, Loulo-Gounkoto, Mali: USP&E rebuilt more than 80 MW of Caterpillar CM32 engines and added 24 MW of new zero-hour capacity, delivering a 104 MW station with 300% greater reliability and availability than previously recorded at site. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your single-line diagram, relay settings and load data under NDA. 2. Get a protection study and GT option set with EPC and O&M scope. 3. Test protection, synchronise the turbine and hand over to accountable O&M.
- Update the single-line diagram, relay settings, fault levels and earthing records for the existing diesel station.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines and natural gas engines/stations against bus capacity and protection limits.
- Review current equipment at the central inventory hub and request generator protection data, records and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve switchgear positions and earthing capacity for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Redraw coordination curves, set synchronisation and load-shed logic, and simulate fault scenarios.
- Witness relay testing and first synchronisation before the turbine enters commercial service.

FAQ: Diesel Station Protection to GT
Why revisit protection when adding a GT to a diesel station?
USP&E revisits protection because a gas turbine changes fault current, earthing behaviour and bus response to load steps. Settings that suited diesels alone can trip the wrong breaker or fail to clear a fault, so coordination must be re-studied before the turbine is allowed to connect.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B share a diesel bus?
USP&E regularly evaluates a remanufactured GE Frame 6B for a shared diesel bus. It can work well when breaker duty, earthing, generator protection and synchronisation settings are confirmed by study, and when inspection records and control-system status show the machine is ready for parallel operation.
Where does USP&E have offices that support diesel power station projects?
USP&E leads diesel station projects from Johannesburg and Cape Town, home to its protection, engineering and commissioning specialists. London supports structuring and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville supply US engineering and equipment, and Wuxi covers switchgear and balance-of-plant made in China. Engineers travel from those offices to witness relay testing on site.
Has USP&E delivered diesel power station projects before?
USP&E has delivered this kind of work before, including Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Caterpillar station at Syama in Mali, which USP&E supplied, installed and operated from 2007 to 2010. USP&E also supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
Is USP&E a broker?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, so the team that studies your protection, supplies the turbine and sets the relays also commissions the combined station and remains accountable for its safe operation long after handover.
How fast can USP&E respond to a protection study request?
USP&E starts as soon as you share your single-line diagram, relay settings and load data. Protection engineers in Johannesburg build the study model first, and the overall timeline then depends on the quality of your records, site access for verification and any switchgear lead times.
Do natural gas engines have a role beside diesel?
USP&E often adds natural gas engines/stations beside diesel units where gas supply allows. Engines can take base or intermediate load at lower fuel cost while diesels cover peaks and emergencies, provided protection settings account for each machine’s fault contribution and response.
What should O&M cover after a GT addition?
USP&E extends O&M after a turbine addition to cover relay testing, breaker maintenance, synchronisation checks, fault-recorder reviews and operator training on the new switching procedures. Diesel and turbine maintenance are scheduled together so the station always keeps enough firm capacity online.
Protect Your Station Before You Expand It
Study protection first and your turbine connects cleanly, faults clear where they should and your diesels keep their value. Skip it and one fault can black out the station and damage equipment. USP&E will help you expand with confidence.
