Diesel Station Fuel Gas Prep
Your diesel station knows its fuel: day tanks, polishers, filters and a delivery schedule that works. Now pipeline gas is coming and gas turbine generators are planned beside the diesel halls, but the gas that reaches your fence may not be the clean, dry, steady fuel a turbine expects.
If fuel gas preparation is treated as a pipe connection, liquids, particles or pressure swings reach the turbine. The result is failed starts, combustion trips, damaged hardware and an expensive new machine stranded while the diesel units carry the load again.
USP&E as Your Guide for Diesel-Plus-Gas Stations
We understand the caution of a team that has made diesel reliable and now has to learn a new fuel. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Make Fuel Gas Preparation the Real Gate
Before choosing a turbine, get a representative gas analysis over time, not a single sample. Composition, heating value, water and hydrocarbon dew points, sulphur and particulates all matter, and they can change with supplier, season and pipeline pressure. Your fuel gas system must deliver gas inside your turbine’s specification on the worst day, not the average one.
That usually means a reception skid with metering, filtration and coalescing, pressure regulation, heating to keep superheat above dew point and, where needed, compression. Place it with space for maintenance and future expansion, and size it for the final station so later machines do not need a second system. Hazardous area classification, gas detection and emergency shutdown valves must be designed in from the start, because retrofitting them around a live diesel station is slow and risky.
Bridge With a Remanufactured GE Frame 6B While Supply Matures
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B can provide firm capacity while gas supply contracts, treatment and later blocks mature. Confirm its records, reman scope, controls condition and preservation, and check its fuel system and combustion hardware against the gas you will actually receive. Dual-fuel capability can protect you if pipeline supply is interrupted.
Natural gas engines/stations often tolerate wider gas quality and can take over intermediate duty from diesel early. Used/new gas turbines belong in the same comparison, judged on fuel tolerance, start reliability and how well each one fits the existing diesel bus and protection.
Phase Toward Modular FX-45 Beside the Diesel Halls
As your station grows toward utility supply, a mining campus or compute loads, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute may follow. Reserve land for gas reception, treatment, electrical yards and cooling interfaces now, so later blocks connect without disturbing the diesel plant that keeps you running today.
The planning reference for that capacity is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One team carrying fuel systems, construction and operations into hyperscale EPC/O&M keeps sampling procedures, operating limits and records consistent across diesel, engines and turbines.

HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share gas analyses, station loads and drawings under NDA. 2. Receive a fuel gas system design and equipment options. 3. Build, commission on gas and run under accountable O&M.
- Map diesel station loads, outage costs, existing fuel systems, and which duties can move to gas turbine generators once prep is ready.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, and a future modular block against that duty and fuel-gas matrix.
- Review current equipment at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Design sampling, filtration, pressure control, SCADA, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

FAQ: Diesel Station Fuel Gas Prep
Why is fuel gas preparation so important for turbines?
USP&E treats fuel gas preparation as critical because turbines need clean, dry gas at steady pressure and temperature. Liquids, particles or pressure swings cause failed starts, combustion trips and hardware damage, so filtration, heating and regulation must be designed around real gas analyses.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B run beside our diesel units?
USP&E can integrate a remanufactured GE Frame 6B beside diesel units once fuel gas, protection and controls are engineered together. Records and preservation are verified, combustion hardware is checked against your gas, and dual-fuel options are reviewed for supply interruptions.
Where are USP&E offices for diesel power station projects?
USP&E leads diesel power station work from its Executive HQ in Johannesburg and its Cape Town office, which provide engineering, design and commissioning support. London structures finance and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville connect you to US supply, and Wuxi follows China manufacturing and supply chain.
Has USP&E delivered power station projects before?
USP&E has delivered over 150 power stations, including supplying 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include Barrick’s 104 MW Loulo-Gounkoto station in Mali and the 16 MW Marampa HFO station in Sierra Leone, finished two months early.
Is USP&E a broker?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the team designing your fuel gas system is accountable for your turbine starting and running reliably on that gas.
How fast can USP&E respond to a fuel gas review?
USP&E can begin once you share gas analyses, supply terms, station loads and drawings. Engineers review gas quality and the reception design first, then equipment options, and timing depends on data quality, supplier agreements, permits and equipment availability rather than on a sales queue or paperwork handoffs.
Do natural gas engines suit a diesel station conversion?
USP&E often recommends natural gas engines/stations as an early step because engines tolerate a wider gas quality range and fit intermediate duty. They reduce diesel burn quickly and give operators valuable experience with gas handling, sampling and safety procedures before larger turbines arrive on site.
What should station O&M cover after gas arrives?
USP&E builds gas-ready O&M around gas sampling, filter changes, dew point monitoring, leak detection, fuel system inspections and operator training. Each check has a named responsible role, so fuel quality problems are caught at the skid before they reach a turbine.
Bring Gas to Your Station the Right Way
Engineer the fuel gas system properly and your new turbines start reliably and run cleanly beside the diesel halls. Skip it and you face trips, damage and a stranded machine. USP&E will help you prepare the fuel before your turbine arrives.
