Diesel Power Station

Diesel Station Insurance Survey Path to GT

Your diesel power station is insured against fire, machinery breakdown and lost revenue, and the insurer will send a surveyor to judge how likely a claim is. What the surveyor sees and reads shapes your premium, your deductible and sometimes whether cover is offered at all.

If you treat the survey as a walk-round to get through, you risk a long list of recommendations, higher premiums and gaps in cover that only appear after a fire or a major failure. That means financial risk on top of downtime. A prepared station turns the survey into proof that the plant is well run.

USP&E Helps You Show Insurers a Well-Run Station

We know you want fair cover and a plant that never needs to claim. USP&E has delivered 150+ power projects in 45+ countries, with 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers build and operate power stations to standards that hold up to scrutiny. Our systems are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified, and every deal runs under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.

You do not need to fear the surveyor. You need your records ready, your station in order and a plan to close every recommendation with evidence.

Know What the Surveyor Looks For

Insurance surveyors usually focus on a few areas: fire risk from fuel and lube oil, fire detection and suppression, machinery condition and maintenance, protection systems, spares and the ability to recover from a major failure. They also look at housekeeping, hot work control and how the station is staffed.

Fuel is often the biggest concern. Leaks around engines, oil-soaked lagging, poor bunding and fuel lines near hot surfaces are common findings. Fix them before the visit, and keep them fixed, because they are real fire risks, not just survey points.

Business interruption is the other big theme. The surveyor will ask how long it would take to recover from losing an engine, a transformer or the control room, and what spares, standby units or rental options you have.

Answer with Records, Not Opinions

Gather the records before the surveyor arrives: maintenance history, oil analysis, protection test reports, fire system inspections, insulation tests, permit-to-work logs and incident reports. A station that can show a tested fire system and recorded protection trips is easier to insure than one that can only say it is fine.

Walk the station yourself the week before, with the survey’s focus areas in mind. Look for blocked fire exits, missing extinguishers, open cable penetrations and oil on floors. Our station operations support teams use the same walk as part of routine O&M, so survey preparation becomes normal work rather than a scramble.

During the visit, answer questions plainly and note every recommendation the surveyor makes. Ask for clarity on anything you do not understand, because a vague recommendation is hard to close.

Close Recommendations and Plan GT Cover

Rank the recommendations by risk and cost and agree a date and a named role for each. Some are quick, such as cleaning or signage. Others, such as fire suppression upgrades, need budget and engineering. Report closed items back to the insurer with photos and records, because evidence of progress improves your next renewal.

If you plan to add gas turbine generators, involve the insurer early. Turbines change the risk picture: high-energy rotors, fuel gas systems and enclosure fire protection. Decisions on fire systems, protection and critical spares for a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, used/new gas turbines or natural gas engines/stations should reflect what the insurer will ask. Our power plant EPC projects build those answers into the design.

Insurers will ask the same questions of AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute run under hyperscale EPC/O&M, and of the New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA. HowTo: Prepare a Diesel Station for an Insurance Survey

Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your last survey report, records and station layout. 2. Receive a preparation walk-down and ranked action list. 3. Close recommendations with evidence and run the station to that standard.

  1. Collect the station’s maintenance, protection test and fire system records before the surveyor arrives.
  2. Walk the station with the surveyor’s likely focus areas: fuel, fire, machinery and housekeeping.
  3. Answer questions with records, not opinions, and note every recommendation made.
  4. Rank the recommendations by risk and cost and agree dates to close each one.
  5. Plan gas turbine fire, protection and spares choices with the insurer’s view in mind.
  6. Report closed recommendations back to the insurer with evidence.

FAQ: Diesel Station Insurance Survey Path to GT

What do insurers look for in a diesel power station survey?

USP&E sees insurers focus on fire risk from fuel and oil, fire detection and suppression, machinery condition, protection systems, spares, housekeeping and how quickly the station can recover from a major failure. Records that prove testing and maintenance carry as much weight as the walk-round itself.

What are common survey findings at diesel stations?

USP&E commonly sees fuel and oil leaks, oil-soaked lagging, poor bunding, fuel lines near hot surfaces, untested fire systems, open cable penetrations and missing protection test records. Most are straightforward to fix, and fixing them reduces real fire and outage risk, not just survey points.

How do I close an insurer’s recommendation?

USP&E closes each recommendation with a named role, a date and evidence such as photos, test reports or invoices. Send the evidence to the insurer or broker as items close. A documented record of progress usually helps at renewal and shows the station is managed well.

Does adding gas turbines change my station insurance?

USP&E advises involving the insurer early when gas turbines are planned. Turbines add high-energy rotors, fuel gas systems and enclosure fire protection to the risk picture. Agreeing fire, protection and spares choices with the insurer’s view in mind avoids surprises at the next survey.

Where are USP&E’s offices for power station support?

USP&E supports diesel power stations from Johannesburg and Cape Town, close to many African utility and mining plants. London supports contracts, finance and insurance structuring, Colorado Springs and Knoxville back US gas turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up equipment made in China.

Has USP&E delivered diesel and HFO power stations before?

USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also include Barrick’s Loulo-Gounkoto station in Mali and a 16 MW HFO station for London Mining in Sierra Leone.

Is USP&E a broker for power stations?

USP&E is not a broker. USP&E engineers, builds and operates power stations with its own people, so the team that prepares your station for the surveyor is the same team that closes the findings and runs the plant to that standard.

How fast can USP&E help before an insurance survey?

USP&E can start reviewing your last survey report, maintenance records and station layout as soon as you share them. Engineers flag the highest fire and outage risks first, so you can fix the most important items before the surveyor arrives.

Turn Your Next Survey into Proof of a Well-Run Station

Prepare your station and the survey shows a plant that is safe to insure. Leave it to chance and you face higher premiums and gaps in cover. USP&E will help you prepare, close findings and run the station with confidence.
