If you do not prepare it, turbine maintenance waits on borrowed cranes, missing tooling and dirty benches. A combustion inspection that should take days stretches into weeks, parts get damaged in handling, and your new capacity sits offline, with downtime and delay you never planned for, while the diesels you hoped to retire carry the load again.
USP&E Helps You Prepare Your Diesel Station Workshop for GT
We know that a power station is only as quick at maintenance as its workshop allows. USP&E brings 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, and our 400+ engineers and project managers plan workshops, lifting and tooling so diesel stations can maintain gas turbine generators on site without waiting on outside help. We work under ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified systems with FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
You do not need to rebuild the workshop. You need a clear list of what turbine work will happen on site, what it needs, and which gaps to close before the first inspection falls due.
Know What Your Workshop Does Today
List the jobs your workshop handles now: cylinder head overhauls, injector testing, turbocharger exchanges, pump repairs, machining and fabrication. Note the tools, lifts, floor space and skills each job uses. This gives you a baseline and shows which of your assets can serve turbines too.
Inspect your overhead crane and every piece of your lifting gear. Check certificates, safe working limits, rail condition, controls and the inspection record. A crane that has only ever lifted diesel parts may not reach, or may not be rated for, the components a turbine package needs to move.
Look at your building itself. Doors, floor loading, lighting, ventilation and power supplies all limit what work can be done inside. A workshop that cannot fit a turbine component through its door is a storage room, not a workshop.
Plan for Turbine Maintenance Tasks and Tooling
Ask the turbine supplier for the maintenance tasks expected on site: borescope inspections, combustion inspections, filter changes, fuel nozzle exchanges, lube oil work and generator checks. List the special tools, lifting fixtures and test equipment each task needs, and decide which to buy, rent or bring with a service team.
Plan clean space for your parts. Turbine fuel and combustion parts, bearings and controls need cleaner handling than most diesel work. A screened clean area with covered storage protects parts from the dust, oil mist and grit that every engine hall produces.
Decide what stays on site and what goes to an outside shop. Hot section repairs and rotor work usually go to specialist facilities, while routine inspections and exchanges can be done locally. Knowing the split lets you size the workshop and plan logistics for the parts that travel.
Keep Records and Cover While Work Happens
Keep your tool lists, calibration records, lifting certificates and workshop job records in the station CMMS. When a torque wrench or a lifting sling is out of date, the system should say so before the job starts, not after.
Plan cover for major work. Natural gas engines/stations, retained diesels, a remanufactured GE Frame 6B or verified used/new gas turbines can carry load while a unit is opened up, so a long inspection does not mean lost supply.
The same workshop thinking applies at much larger sites. On compute campuses built under hyperscale EPC/O&M, AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators and gas turbines for compute are supported by planned tooling and lift capacity, and New USP&E FX-45 45MW Modular Gas Turbine for the Hyperscale Data Center sector in the USA is set out so that block maintenance uses shared workshop resources. Plan your workshop with the same care.
Global Offices Behind Your Diesel Power Station Programme
Your plant does not run on head-office time. USP&E anchors your diesel station protection upgrade in Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineering, project controls and commissioning support sit, close to the African sites USP&E has powered for years.
When relays, switchgear and gas turbine packages for your diesel bus must be financed, sourced or shipped, London (162-168 Regent Street) structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) reach US equipment supply, and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) supports China supply chain and manufacturing.
For diesel station workshops taking on turbine work, Johannesburg and Cape Town engineers can inspect your crane and tooling with the station crew and list the gaps to close before inspections. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. One accountable team behind 150+ power projects in 45+ countries and 25,000 MW contracted since 2002, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.

HowTo: Prepare a Diesel Station Workshop for GT Work
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share workshop layouts, crane records and turbine maintenance plans under NDA. 2. Receive a gap list for lifting, tooling, clean space and skills. 3. Close the gaps, then maintain turbines on site under accountable O&M.
- List the jobs the workshop does today and the tools, lifts and space each one uses.
- Inspect the overhead crane, lifting gear and certificates, and record the safe working limits.
- List the gas turbine maintenance tasks that will happen on site and the tooling each needs.
- Plan clean space, storage and lifting for turbine components that must stay protected.
- Agree which work stays on site and which goes to an outside shop, with cover from natural gas engines/stations where needed.
- Keep tool, calibration and lifting records in the station CMMS.

FAQ: Diesel Station Workshop and Crane Path to GT
Can a diesel station workshop support gas turbine maintenance?
USP&E often finds that a diesel station workshop can support much of the routine turbine work with some upgrades. Cranes, tooling, clean space and skills must be checked against the turbine tasks. Hot section and rotor repairs usually still go to specialist facilities off site.
What should you check on the workshop crane?
USP&E checks the crane’s safe working limit, reach, rails, controls, certificates and inspection history. You should compare these against the heaviest turbine components that will be lifted inside. If the crane falls short, plan mobile lifts or an upgrade before work is due.
Why do turbine parts need clean space?
USP&E protects turbine fuel parts, bearings and controls from the dust, oil mist and grit that engine halls produce. Contamination can damage seals and nozzles or cause failures after reassembly. A screened clean area with covered storage is a simple way to protect those parts.
What turbine work should stay on site?
USP&E usually keeps borescope inspections, filter changes, fuel nozzle exchanges, lube oil work and generator checks on site. Hot section repairs and rotor work normally go to specialist shops. Knowing the split helps you size the workshop and plan parts logistics for your station.
Where are USP&E’s offices that support diesel stations?
USP&E supports diesel stations from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where O&M engineers and technicians can reach your site. London structures contracts and finance, Colorado Springs and Knoxville support turbine supply and engineering, and Wuxi follows up tooling and equipment made in China.
Has USP&E delivered power station projects before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies also cover London Mining at Marampa, Sierra Leone, where USP&E engineered, supplied and commissioned an HFO power station ahead of schedule. You can read each case study yourself.
Is USP&E a broker for power station services?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E engineers, builds, operates and maintains power stations with its own people, so the team that reviews your workshop is the same team that carries out turbine maintenance on site and answers for the result.
How fast can USP&E respond to a workshop review?
USP&E can start reviewing your workshop layout, crane records and turbine maintenance plan as soon as you share them under NDA. Engineers flag lifting and tooling gaps that would stall the first inspection, then plan a site visit around your station schedule.
Make Your Workshop Turbine Ready
Prepare the workshop and every turbine inspection starts with the right crane, tools and clean space. Leave it and maintenance waits on borrowed gear while your diesels carry the load. USP&E will help you plan, equip and maintain with confidence.
