Diesel Station Fuel-Polish Path to GT
Your diesel power station runs on fuel that sits in tanks for weeks or months. Water settles, microbes grow and sediment builds, and your polishing system is what keeps that fuel fit to burn. When you add gas turbine generators, some may also burn liquid fuel as backup.
If fuel quality is assumed rather than measured, the risk is blocked filters, injector and nozzle damage, and engines or turbines that trip when you need them most. A tank farm that only looks clean on paper can turn a backup fuel switch into an outage.
USP&E as Your Guide on Station Fuel Quality
We understand that fuel problems hide quietly until the worst possible moment. Since 2002 USP&E has built 150+ power stations, supplied about 25 000 MW and guided projects in 85+ countries, with 35+ completed utility-scale projects and 18 live projects in 11 countries. Our 400+ engineers and project managers are ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified and work under FCPA and OFAC controls. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor, not a broker.
Measure Your Fuel, Not Just Your Tank Levels
Sample every tank regularly from the bottom as well as the draw-off level, and test for water, sediment, microbial growth and particle count. Record results by tank and date. Trends show which tanks need cleaning, which polishing loops are under-sized and where water is getting in.
Gas turbines that keep liquid fuel as backup usually need cleaner fuel than diesel engines. Check the turbine fuel specification and compare it with your test results. If the gap is large, you may need finer filtration, a dedicated polished day tank or a separate supply for the turbines.
Segregate Tanks and Run Polishing Properly
Keep receiving, storage and day tanks separate, so new deliveries settle and are tested before use. Run polishing loops on a schedule and after every delivery, drain water from tank bottoms and keep tank vents and seals in good condition. Write who does each task and how often.
Fuel that sits for long periods degrades, especially in warm climates, and your oldest stock is often the fuel reserved for emergencies. Rotate stock where possible, and treat long-term storage with care. Natural gas engines/stations reduce liquid fuel demand on your site, but any backup liquid fuel still needs the same discipline.
Bridge Units and Larger Blocks Need Clean Fuel Too
A remanufactured GE Frame 6B is often evaluated as a bridge while gas reception is finished, sometimes running on liquid fuel at first. Check its fuel system condition and filter history with the records and inspection scope, and compare used/new gas turbines on fuel flexibility and filtration needs.
If the station grows toward AI gas turbines, hyperscale generators or gas turbines for compute for a nearby campus, backup fuel storage grows with it. The planning reference is modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, for 50 Hz and 60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028. One contractor carrying hyperscale EPC/O&M keeps fuel standards consistent across the station.
Test a backup fuel switch on a real unit during commissioning, with filters monitored. It is the only reliable proof that your polished fuel and your machines agree.
USP&E Teams Behind Your Diesel Power Station Site
Remote sites need people who know frontier work. USP&E runs your diesel station protection upgrade from Johannesburg (22 Kildoon Rd, Bryanston) and Cape Town (31 Brickfield Road, Woodstock), where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision for projects far from the nearest service shop.
Further back in the chain, London (162-168 Regent Street) handles financing and contract structure for relays, switchgear and gas turbine packages for your diesel bus; Colorado Springs (1755 Telstar Dr, Suite 300) and Knoxville (800 S Gay St, Suite 700) secure US equipment, parts and engineering support; and Wuxi, China (No. 1, Ningzhou Road, Wuxi) keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
For a diesel station, that means the engineers who review your fuel test results also design the polishing and segregation upgrades and witness the first backup fuel switch, so the fuel ledger and the hardware match. Regions served: USA | AFRICA | UK | UAE | CHINA. That team has guided projects in 85+ countries, delivered 35+ completed utility-scale projects and runs 18 live projects in 11 countries, ISO 9001 and ISO 45001 certified.
What USP&E Has Delivered for Diesel Power Station Buyers
You need proof that USP&E builds and runs stations properly. These projects show station delivery, operation and large-scale refurbishment.
- USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania.
- Resolute Mining, Syama, Mali: USP&E supplied, installed and operated a 30 MW Caterpillar power station for process plant and process water from 2007 to 2010. Read the case study.
- Barrick Gold, Loulo-Gounkoto, Mali: USP&E rebuilt more than 80 MW of Caterpillar CM32 engines and added 24 MW of new zero-hour capacity, delivering a 104 MW station with 300% greater reliability and availability than previously recorded at site. Read the case study.
HowTo: Build the equipment and delivery path
Your 3-step plan: 1. Share your fuel test results, tank layout and delivery records. 2. Get a polishing and segregation plan with machine, EPC and O&M scope. 3. Commission, prove a backup fuel switch and hand over the fuel ledger.
- Map diesel station loads, fuel polish cycles, tank segregation, and which duties can move to gas turbine generators once fuel-quality evidence gates are ready.
- Compare a remanufactured GE Frame 6B, verified used/new gas turbines, natural gas engines/stations, and a future modular block against that duty and fuel matrix.
- Review current equipment at the central inventory hub and request records, inspection findings, controls status, and logistics dimensions.
- Reserve civil and electrical interfaces for modular FX-45 OCGT 45MW / CCGT 108MW 2×1, 50/60 Hz, with capacity slots from 2028.
- Design polish cycles, tank segregation, operator training, spares, and O&M responsibilities in one matrix.
- Complete permits, funding, fuel agreements, and commissioning rehearsals before final equipment selection.

FAQ: Diesel Station Fuel-Polish Path to GT
Why treat fuel polish as an evidence gate before adding a gas turbine?
USP&E treats fuel quality as a gate because turbines that keep liquid backup fuel are sensitive to water, sediment and particles. Without measured, polished fuel, a backup switch can block filters, damage nozzles and trip the unit just when your station needs it.
How often should station fuel tanks be tested?
USP&E recommends regular sampling of every tank from the bottom and the draw-off level, plus testing after each delivery. Results for water, sediment, microbes and particle count are trended by tank, so problems are found and fixed before fuel reaches your machines.
Can a remanufactured GE Frame 6B fit a diesel fuel-polish path?
USP&E can fit a remanufactured GE Frame 6B into your fuel system when its fuel specification, filtration and day tank arrangement match your polished supply. Its fuel system condition and filter history are reviewed with the records and inspection scope first.
Where are USP&E offices that support power station projects?
USP&E runs power station projects from Johannesburg and Cape Town, where engineers plan mobilisation, spares and site supervision. London handles financing and contracts, Colorado Springs and Knoxville secure US equipment and parts, and Wuxi keeps Chinese-made switchgear and balance-of-plant moving.
Has USP&E delivered power stations before?
USP&E supplied 28 Cummins KTA50 containerised diesel gensets, 1,275 kVA each, for Perseus Mining’s Nyanzaga Gold Project in Tanzania. Public case studies include Resolute Mining’s 30 MW Syama station and Barrick Gold’s 104 MW Loulo-Gounkoto refurbishment in Mali, both built and run to demanding standards.
Is USP&E a broker for station equipment?
USP&E is not a broker. USP&E is a full-service EPC and O&M contractor that engineers, supplies, builds, commissions and operates power stations, so the team that designs your fuel polishing and segregation also proves it works with your engines and turbines during commissioning.
How fast can USP&E respond to a fuel quality review?
USP&E can begin as soon as you share fuel test results, tank layout and delivery records. A first assessment follows quickly, and the full timeline depends on whether new sampling is needed and how much cleaning or rework your tanks require.
What should O&M cover after a fuel-polish redesign?
USP&E includes tank sampling, water draining, polishing loop runs, filter changes, tank inspections and periodic backup fuel tests in O&M. Each task has a named role and frequency, so your fuel stays fit to burn and every machine can switch fuel when required.
Keep Your Station on Clean Fuel
Get fuel quality right and every engine and turbine starts and switches fuel cleanly. Get it wrong and blocked filters turn a backup plan into an outage. USP&E will help you measure, polish and prove your fuel.
